Week 4 Tight ends

TE’s remarks: 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan finally woke up from his George Kittle daze and used his tight end more creatively against the Packers, giving him 16 snaps in the slot and six on the outside. Both were five more than the previous week’s total, with his number of online snaps dropping from 57 to 42 even as the Niners had the same number of games in total. Kittle hiked 41 routes after seeing 30 the week before, responding 7/92. Really, it’s not rocket science. Shanny has to come out of her overly smart by the middle of 2021.… We knew Week 3 would be a huge test for TJ Hockenson. How could he cope with his rapidly increasing defensive attention? The answer was 2/10. There are going to be speed bumps for a tight end very targeted in an offense without wide receivers. It still seems very likely that Hockenson’s volume will take more weeks than not. … Are there more Week 4 lockdowns than Rob Gronkowski scoring a touchdown at Foxboro? Provided his ribs cooperate, of course. It’s worth noting that no team has surrendered fewer tight fantasy points than the Patriots, although they did run into a schedule where Mike Gesicki was the toughest foe.

Mark Andrews came to life against the Lions’ porous seam defense. The Broncos are a lot tougher, but Week 3 demonstrated just how far Andrews stays away from the Ravens’ receivers. … Noah Fant comes out of a calm Week 3 against a Ravens defense that bled points at Darren Waller and Travis Kelce before containing TJ Hockenson. Unlike Hock, Fant actually has a few wide ones to cover himself with. It is a good place. … The use of Kyle Pitts was somehow better than expected even though production was the worst-case scenario. This football team game could go both ways. Chase Young and his company appear to be late in resuming a game from the start. The Falcons line is the perfect opportunity. If that happens, Matt Ryan won’t have time to hand the ball over to Pitts. … Although his production remains stuck in neutral, Logan Thomas’ number of snaps and routes continues to portend an escape. @ATL looks awfully good on the calendar. … Tyler Higbee has yet to get past six targets, although like Thomas he plays almost all snaps. That must count as something in this 55 total shootout that’s waiting to happen.

Considering what’s behind him, we have no choice but to keep chasing touchdowns with Robert Tonyan. … Evan Engram had, as you might expect, little impact on his debut in week 3, although we have to take note of his six goals. That number will increase with Sterling Shepard (hamstrings) and Darius Slayton (hamstrings) on the shelf. The empty volume is always the volume. … Dallas Goedert is a big bet that could deliver a zero against the Chiefs’ struggling defense. … Mike Gesicki saw his goals drop from three to six to 12. The increase came even as the Dolphins’ receiving bodies became more crowded. It’s ultimately difficult to see a sufficiently consistent TE1 production emerging from the chaos of Gesicki’s quarterback and receiver. … Jonnu Smith has 74 yards on 16 targets. Only nine tight ends drew more eyes. At some point, it must mean something. Coach Bill Belichick’s potential revenge after Smith’s Week 3 dropathon is worth watching. … That, combined with Hunter Henry’s slightly more robust production, gives Henry the classification advantage over a D Bucs allowing for the ninth tightest fantasy point. … The Vikings pass more and more and Tyler Conklin is one of the main beneficiaries.
