Hurricane Ida Message: More Yin, Less Yang
[ad_1]
Billionaires like Bezos aren’t the only ones abusing Yang. The natural world is sick because humanity’s bond with it has been severed due to our unhealthy lifestyles.
So we have to all to tend to. We must elevate the collective quality of our being. We need to rediscover the stillness, receptivity, and patient wisdom that comes from experience instead of dominating nature. We have to embrace Yin for a while – only Yin.
How do we start? Pray.
Pray for Louisiana, for New Orleans, for America, and for the world.
Pray for modern-day lords who accumulate wealth and for their overworked and underpaid employees.
Pray that we can heal the inhumanity of mankind before Ida – for now, a precious warning about the consequences of human stupidity, greed, kleptocracy, patriarchy and corruption – does not becomes the first of many tragedies.
Pray that humanity will remember that we are not above nature. We are not below nature either. We are part of nature; if we abuse nature, we are abusing ourselves.
It is only after this time of rest, prayer and hope – only after a collective revaluation of Yin – that we can act correctly, using Yang as an ally of Yin and nature instead of its oppressor. .
So: what does the Yang informed by the Yin look like?
I do not know; I am not an ancient Chinese philosopher, just a Lebanese-American lawyer.
Having said that, I suspect that a wiser Yang, a Yang that has been balanced by Yin, does not look like rocket building during a time of great need. I suspect it sounds healthier, calmer, more determined. I suspect that instead of destroying it, he is building; that instead of intimidating him, it uplifts; that instead of tarnishing and dividing our society, it unites.
More importantly, I believe in my soul that regaining some semblance of balance (i.e. regaining our souls) is the only way to repair our societies, our neighborhoods, our infrastructure and our – this – precious planet.
To conclude:
Many of us – from Jeff Bezos to politicians on the left and right to (most notably) the design of Bezos’ Yang-inspired rocket – could use a little more Yin. Indeed, Yin must inform Yang, as Yang without Yin is blind. Yang without Yin leads to authoritarianism, war and social dysfunction.
But what about those of you who are silent? Who receives but never acts? Who observes but never affirms? Who, like Robert Frost, wish a reprieve in the woods – “Beautiful, dark and deep” – but know that your trip is not yet over: that you “have miles to cover before sleeping?”
Your Yin, your sensitivity, is both a burden and a blessing. For you, as for Frost, the road to recovery is different; unlike those who have too much Yang and too little Yin, your Yang is a good Yang – a balanced Yang informed by Yin. Your task will be to face the world – to face your fear – and to act. With assurance, determination and confidence.
Because, God knows, there is a lot to fix. And too many good people are silent.
âThe world is a beautiful place, and it’s worth fighting for. “
My best to all,
Mike
