Misfits Gaming strengthens its executive team with new recruits

Multi-regional esports company Misfits Playgroup (MGG) announced three new hires as the company restructures to a media company.

Steven brauntuch and Candace rhymer joined the organization as the first Marketing Director and Human Resources Director, respectively. What’s more, Alyson Schefren was hired as MGG Vice President of Integrated Marketing.

The three new roles are intended to prepare the company for “aggressive investments in marketing, people and global operations,” according to a statement. Additionally, the three senior executives would lead MGG’s efforts to accelerate growth and align the company with the production, distribution and monetization of original programming.

Ben Spoont, CEO and co-founder of Misfits Gaming Group, commented on the announcement, “Steve, Candace and Alyson will play a pivotal role in the evolution of Misfits from an esports organization to a media company. Prior to joining the company, Brauntuch worked for Blizzard Entertainment as Director of Global Marketing Strategy and Growth and then as Director of Integrated Marketing.

Rhymer brings years of experience in data analytics, having held several positions at BrightBytes, most recently as COO. According to the release, she will focus on scaling up and implementing the internal practices required for healthy team expansion.

In her previous roles, Schefren was a freelance marketing consultant and project manager for AS Freelance Marketing and director of creative strategy at Wattpad.

Series of hires by MGG follows securing $ 35million (~ £ 26million) funding led by US broadcasting company EW Scripps. MGG reportedly plans to “reimagine its business as a media company” and launch a list of broadcast programs featuring esports teams, the statement said.

The company added that the funding round and new hires will be “”materially refocus the company away from the brutal reality of the gains and losses of the competitive game ”.

MGG manages five professional esports teams across multiple titles and leagues, including the European League of Legends Championship, League of Legends French League, Overwatch League, Call of Duty League and Rocket League Championship Series.

Esports Insider Says: As expected, MGG is continuing its ambitious plan to become a media company, not just an esports organization. Next to the investment of EW Scripps, the trio of new executives will no doubt help the company move closer to this goal.
