1. It’s a wrap. If firing a rocket from Van Horn in far west Texas wasn’t interesting enough, how about a company near Hawley packing the semi-trailer that delivered the rocket? We just need Jeff Bezos to come to town and spend some money. Maybe remind him that we had Rocket Oldsmobile here.
2. The best canons in music. The Texan trio ZZ Top is scheduled for a concert in December. We have over five months to purchase tickets, which could be an early Christmas present for some fans. The group was founded in 1969 by Gibbons with two other musicians. That year Frank Beard and Dusty Hill arrived, which means the trio have remained intact the entire time. It is perhaps more impressive than those long beards.
3. They shot at Glen Cove. A Stewart Stevenson used in the military has been converted to a “firefighting machine,” according to the Glen Cove Volunteer Fire Department. It can hold 500 gallons of water and has a foam capacity. The truck came through two big ones owned by the Texas A&M Forest Service. The rugged terrain vehicle is in service and has already worked on a 35-acre wildfire. Glen Cove is located between Coleman and Winters.
4. A river crosses it. Kudos to Wayne Nelson of the Little River Band, who showed up at the Highland Food Pantry on Friday before the band’s concert that night at the Abilene Convention Center. The group tries to make an impact on the community wherever they perform. It reminds me of their hit “Help Is on the Way”.
5. Ride them, cowboy. What a week to celebrate the life of a cowboy. Saturday is the National Cowboy Day. Ryan Feerer’s collection of four Western Wear Stamps was issued by the U.S. Postal Service on Friday. So if you put on your hat, snap shirt, belt buckle, and boots, you are joining the crowd here in West Texas.
6. Peace, Love and Ben-Gay. Still remarkable to think how little we did a year ago, compared to everything that was going on this weekend. Events include the return of Garageband Woodstock, everyone is now two years older than in 2019 at the last musical gathering.
7. Jerry and Jimmie. We know a free lunch doesn’t exist, and we thought Jerry Jones was right. But this week’s Dallas Cowboys owner thought losing coach Jimmie Johnson, who brought the team back to the Super Bowl, was something he shouldn’t have let happen. “It was my job was to keep it together,†Jones said. Dallas hasn’t returned to the Super Bowl since 1996, after Johnson left.
8. Has the sorcerer hired? They are doing “Hocus Pocus 2”, with the return of the original cast of Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy. Production designer Nelson Coates emailed us this week that he’s in Rhode Island preparing the film. “Hocus Pocus†is one of those films that gained fans after its theatrical release. It was Paramount’s Halloween movie last fall. It’s for Disney + and will be released in 2022.

1. Rising. With the exception of July 1, the maximum daily temperature was below average, with a high reading through Friday 94. It is quite pleasant for the seventh month of the year. But temperatures are expected to reach nearly 100 on Sunday and Monday. We haven’t had a 100 degree day this year. 10 years ago this summer we experienced 81 days of 100 degrees or more and persistent drought. August may bring about a change, but it was good for as long as it lasted.

1. Seventeen days? Classes at the Texas Leadership Charter Academy are scheduled to begin August 10, which means the school is fast approaching the new month. Seems early, but at least the tax-free weekend is August 6-8. Classes at Abilene Christian School begin two days later. The Wylie ISD begins August 18 and Abilene ISD begins August 19.
2. Merkel what? There were several hmmms Monday on the headline “Merkel visits ‘surreal’ flood scene”. Merkel normally means the city west of Abilene. It is also the name of the German Chancellor. We do not know if it was named in honor of our Merkel …
